Having traveled to 43 countries across Africa and Asia to engage directly with individuals affected by conflict, poverty, and climate change, I’ve become acutely aware of a significant issue: the substantial bias in Japan’s reporting of international issues, heavily favoring certain regions. The majority of coverage focuses on the US, East Asia, and Western Europe, while regions like Africa, Latin America, South Asia, and other parts of the Global South receive minimal attention, if any, in Japanese media.

Motivated by this observation, I made a conscious decision to report on global issues overlooked by Japanese media. Presently, I serve as a journalist in the international news department of Nippon TV, covering air strikes and refugee crises worldwide.

A pivotal learning experience challenging my beliefs occurred during the production of a documentary examining Japan’s treatment of refugees. In the documentary, I scrutinized the unequal support offered to refugees from various regions, highlighting the disparity in assistance between evacuees from Ukraine and those from other areas. Additionally, I addressed concerns regarding potential racial biases in public discourse surrounding refugee affairs.

To craft this documentary, I immersed myself in Kurdish refugee communities, establishing rapport and conducting interviews to illuminate their experiences. The documentary’s broadcast spurred significant support, including medical aid that saved the life of a 5-year-old child. This reinforced my conviction in journalism’s power to effect positive change and inspired me to delve deeper into the intricacies of international reporting.

However, I found myself intrigued by the disproportionate emphasis on certain regions, such as Ukraine, amidst numerous humanitarian crises in the Middle East and Africa. This realization motivated me to pursue further education in journalism in New York, where I aim to engage with cutting-edge practices, gain global perspectives, and collaborate with professionals worldwide.

I anticipate that my residency at I-House will propel my personal growth journey by providing ample opportunities to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds and viewpoints. Living in such an intellectually stimulating environment will challenge me to broaden my comprehension of global issues and foster empathy and respect for diverse cultures. I eagerly anticipate contributing to I-House’s vibrant community, leveraging my experiences and skills to enrich the lives of fellow residents.

In conclusion, my academic, fieldwork, and journalism experiences have equipped me to thrive in the diverse and intellectually enriching atmosphere of I-House. I am enthusiastic about embarking on this journey of personal growth and making a positive impact within the community.

Write about a time when you challenged your preexisting worldview. Explain how you encountered the experiences and perspectives of people who you disagreed with, and how it impacted your thinking and motivated you to act.

As someone born and raised in Japan, my six-month tenure as a United Nations volunteer in Zambia presented me with significant challenges to my preexisting worldview. Among these experiences, my deep dive into discussions surrounding climate change had the most profound impact on me, altering my understanding of global environmental issues and the resulting inequalities.

Living in Zambia, where power outages lasted for more than 15 hours daily, was vastly different from life in Japan. It exposed me to the harsh realities of climate change on a daily basis. Through my work organizing community SDGs projects and educational outreach activities on climate change, I witnessed firsthand the impact of environmental degradation on poverty and food insecurity. Interacting with Zambian youths during school outreach programs, I saw how climate change posed a direct threat to their future and livelihoods.

What truly challenged my existing beliefs was the disparity between the global discourse on climate change and the lived experiences of those most affected by it. In Zambia, climate change discussions were pervasive and urgent, contrasting starkly with the lack of emphasis on the issue in my native Japan. This dissonance compelled me to confront the unequal distribution of responsibility and consequences in the global fight against climate change.

Furthermore, my interactions with Zambian citizens underscored the disproportionate burden borne by African nations, despite their minimal contribution to global warming. Witnessing the resilience of Zambian communities facing the brunt of climate change, I was further motivated to advocate for greater international support and solidarity in addressing the challenges of adaptation and resilience-building.

My volunteer experience in Zambia, particularly regarding climate change, significantly expanded my worldview and deepened my understanding of the necessity for collective action. By confronting diverse perspectives and uncomfortable truths, I gained insights into the interconnectedness of global issues and the imperative for collaboration. Additionally, living in a cultural context vastly different from my own upbringing cultivated adaptability and a positive mindset.

Moving forward, I am committed to leveraging my experiences to effect positive change and contribute to a more equitable and sustainable world.
