Leadership and influence Chevening is looking for individuals who will be future leaders or influencers in their home countries. Explain how you meet this requirement, using clear examples of your own leadership and influencing skills to support your answer.
(minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) I firmly believe that I possess the potential to become a future leader and influencer in my home country, supported by a wide array of experiences and accomplishments that illustrate my leadership and influencing skills.

One example of this is my leadership in the operation of a web media platform called Global News View (GNV). This web media site aims to increase awareness of international issues not covered by Japanese media by collecting information from foreign sources and explaining them in Japanese. Under the supervision of Professor ●●, an expert in international politics, GNV is run by a team of approximately 30 people each year. I served as the team leader for the Middle East and North Africa region, contributing articles and achieving over●● page views. Driven by a strong desire to reach a wider audience, I took on the role of PR Strategy Leader. I established a publicity group, recruited team members, and developed an efficient operational strategy using statistical tools for managing social media. I noticed that the previous random updates on social media only once a week were a problem, and I introduced an automatic social media posting program that could update every day. Furthermore, I analyzed the optimal times for social media posts based on the day of the week, aligning our posting schedule with the times when social media content tends to be shared the most. On Instagram, I began posting beautiful photos from different countries to capture people’s interest and used these photos as an introduction to articles on international issues in that country or region. After a year of such trial and error, leading as a team, I successfully increased the daily web traffic from 300 to an impressive ●●.

Furthermore, I identified an issue with GNV, which was that while it was accessible to those already interested in international issues, its content was rather technical and less engaging for young individuals without a prior interest in global affairs. To address this, I managed my time effectively while working full-time, dedicating my free hours to launching a new website from scratch. The new website was designed to break down the international issues explained on GNV, making them more appealing to individuals who might not otherwise be interested in global affairs. I adjusted the font size, changed the tone from a formal explanation style to a more conversational tone, and redesigned the website for easy reading on smartphones. I operated this website and social media independently for two years, significantly increasing monthly web traffic from zero to ●● and growing social media followers to over 1,000.

These achievements demonstrate my skills in effectively communicating information to a broad audience.
Relationship-building and shared learning Chevening is looking for individuals with strong professional relationship-building skills, who will engage with the Chevening community and influence and lead others in their chosen profession. Please explain how you build and maintain relationships in a professional capacity, using clear examples of how you currently do this, and outline how you hope to use these skills in the future. (minimum word count: 100 words; maximum word count: 500 words) As a journalist, I have demonstrated a strong capacity for building and sustaining professional relationships with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

One compelling example of this is my positive rapport with Japan’s Kurdish refugee community. In Japan, the recognition rate for refugees is remarkably low, and asylum seekers confront numerous challenges, including employment ineligibility and limited healthcare access. Recognizing the importance of conveying their circumstances, I actively engaged with the Kurdish refugee community. I visited Kurdish single mothers, learned to prepare their traditional dishes, spent quality time with their children, and engaged in casual conversations during shared meals. These interactions allowed me to establish trust within the community successfully. This trust subsequently provided me with the opportunity to conduct interviews and feature community members as guests on the broadcast programs I produced. As a result, the program was televised on World Refugee Day in 2022, and it garnered over●views on YouTube. Furthermore, significant funds were raised through viewer donations, ultimately saving the life of a five-year-old child through medical assistance. These experiences not only honed my relationship-building skills but also vividly demonstrated the positive impact such skills can have in effecting meaningful change in the world.

On another occasion, in April 2023, I had the opportunity to participate as a Japanese journalist in the “Workplace Diversity & Inclusion” seminar and reception organized by the British Embassy in Tokyo. This event provided a platform for discussions and networking between representatives from various Japanese and British companies, focusing on their perspectives and efforts regarding the promotion of diversity and inclusion (D&I) in the workplace.

During the seminar, I had the privilege of meeting a Senior Director from the British company Robert Walters, who introduced me to the “Lawyers for LGBT & Allies Network” (NPO) with a focus on supporting the LGBTQ+ community and its allies in the Asia-Pacific region. Through these discussions, it became evident that the UK was significantly ahead of Japan in implementing D&I initiatives in the workplace. The progress and promotion of D&I in British workplaces were seen as contributing to securing top talent and economic benefits, with many companies swiftly adapting to the evolving needs of their employees and society, including diversifying family structures and revising internal policies. This highlighted a substantial gap between British and Japanese companies.

Recognizing this disparity, I created a television broadcast program that highlights the initiatives of British companies where sexual minorities hold executive positions. This program emphasizes the ways in which these individuals create a more inclusive and accommodating work environment for employees with diverse personalities. This broadcast is poised to serve as a valuable reference for Japan as it formulates its future D&I strategies.

Utilizing my strong skills in building professional relationships, I have plans to establish a non-profit media organization specializing in international reporting in Japan. To achieve this goal, I intend to build robust collaborations with British news media, which have a long-standing commitment to international reporting, and with journalists who are deeply dedicated to this field.
Studying in the UK Outline why you have selected your chosen three university courses, and explain how this relates to your previous academic or professional experience and your plans for the future. Please enter new information and examples here and not duplicate the information you have entered on the work experience and education section of this form (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) In my choice of City, University of London’s International Journalism course, the University of East Anglia’s Media and Global Development course and London School of Economics and Political Science’s Media, Communication and Development course, I aim to focus on humanitarian reporting in international journalism, which is one of the few specialized postgraduate programs worldwide.

In particular, the book “Humanitarian Journalists: Covering Crises from a Boundary Zone,” co-authored by Professor Mel Bunce at City, University of London, and Professor Martin Scott at the University of East Anglia in December 2022, closely relates to my research theme. I have already established contact with these professors, and they have expressed keen interest in my research. Their extensive expertise in humanitarian journalism further solidifies my belief that these courses are an ideal match for my academic and career goals.

Furthermore, my first-choice institution, City, University of London, is strategically located near the BBC, which serves as a global hub for international reporting. Many BBC correspondents are closely affiliated with this university, enhancing the depth of the connection. This proximity will provide me with invaluable opportunities to establish relationships with BBC journalists and editors, especially in gaining insights into the editorial decisions within conflict reporting.

The purpose of my study in the UK is to elucidate the factors and processes that determine whether armed conflicts receive attention or are ignored by the media. My extensive travel to 45 countries in Africa and Asia, where I interacted directly with people affected by conflicts, poverty, and climate change, has heightened my awareness of a major issue: international issues reported in Japan are heavily biased toward certain regions. Regions and countries with concentrated wealth and power receive significant media attention, while underreported regions, often referred to as the Global South, receive minimal coverage. This awareness has been the driving force behind my engagement with unreported conflicts as a journalist.

Recent events, such as Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, receiving substantial media attention and humanitarian support, in contrast to the neglect of similar situations in Myanmar and Yemen, have further ignited my interest in academically understanding why such disparities in media coverage occur. Through the analysis of Media Agenda Building, I hope to provide insights to address the disparities in conflict reporting that exist.

In Japan, there is a scarcity of graduate programs specializing in international reporting, and domestic media outlets do not prioritize conflict reporting. In the future, I intend to bring back the knowledge and expertise acquired from UK to Japan. I will continue my work in the field of international journalism, with a specific focus on advocating for more balanced and comprehensive conflict reporting. My goal is to shine a light on conflicts that are often overlooked, ensuring that the world has better access to information about these critical issues. These courses will equip me with the essential tools to become a future leader in Japanese international reporting, fostering more equitable and informed global perspectives.
Career Plan Chevening is looking for individuals who have a clear post-study career plan. Please outline your immediate plans upon returning home and your longer term career goals. You may wish to consider how these relate to what the UK government is doing in your country. (minimum word count: 100 words, maximum word count: 500 words) After graduating, I plan to utilize the specialized knowledge in international journalism that I will gain in the UK to build a career as a journalist with a focus on international humanitarian reporting. I also intend to formally establish a non-profit media organization specializing in international reporting and expand its operations to contribute to the enhancement of regional balance in international reporting in Japan.

As my immediate plan upon returning to Japan, I plan to work as a journalist at a Japanese television station, specializing in international reporting. Despite the ongoing process of globalization, only a mere 10% of Japan’s media coverage is dedicated to international reporting, and within that, regions with significant issues, such as Africa, receive less than 5% of international reporting, resulting in substantial regional disparities. My goal is to collaborate with media institutions and journalists I encountered during my studies in the UK to build a network that enhances the balance of international reporting, shining a light on underreported regions and events and aiming for regionally diverse information dissemination.

For my long-term career goals, I aspire to establish a non-profit media organization that gains high recognition both domestically and internationally. Through this organization, I aim to ensure that international news reporting in Japan is conducted from diverse perspectives and raises awareness about international issues. Furthermore, I plan to strengthen cooperation between Japan and the United Kingdom, contributing to the expansion of collaboration in the field of international humanitarian journalism.

Furthermore, I plan to promote programs that convey the importance of international reporting to a new generation of journalists and media professionals while enhancing journalism education in Japan. Specifically, I wish to collaborate with educational institutions to increase the number of Japanese journalists knowledgeable in the field of international humanitarian reporting and apply an international humanitarian perspective in their reporting.

These goals and activities are closely related to initiatives by the UK government that support international reporting. The UK places significant emphasis on international journalism, with media outlets like the BBC and The Guardian actively reporting on situations in Africa that are often not covered by Japanese media. I aim to learn from these initiatives and bring them back to Japan. My career plan involves collaborating with such initiatives to strengthen the field of international reporting, ultimately increasing the overall percentage of international reporting to 20% in Japan and Africa’s share to over 10% within international reporting. By deepening cooperation between the UK and Japan and enhancing the roles of both countries in international reporting, I will encourage collaboration among media and experts in both nations.

In summary, my post-study career plan entails harnessing the expertise in international journalism acquired in the UK to amplify the voices often overlooked, thereby contributing to the realization of an information environment in which Japanese people can comprehensively and objectively view the world and the issues it faces.
